I love the Olympics. I love figure skating. But there is simply no way I can support an Olympics in Russia. Every day we see more disgusting photos of LGBT people in complete agony. We hear horrifying stories of gay teens being kidnapped & tortured. We hear Russian newscasters saying “their hearts … should be buried in the ground or burned as unsuitable for the continuation of life” to a round of applause by the studio audience. Putin wants to use gays as scapegoats to regain some political favor, but we in the civilized world have to hold him accountable for this. We can’t sit on our couches in February and watch a 3 hour opening ceremony/commercial about the beauty of Russia underscored by John Williams’ Olympic theme and turn a blind eye. There are Draconian laws against gay people in Russia and the IOC (thus far) can’t fully ensure the safety and non-persecution of gay athletes, family members and visitors during these two and half weeks. In fact the IOC might even punish athletes who speak out regarding this. Human rights are more important than sport. The IOC and major Political figures have the chance to speak out and potentially change this situation for the better. Have we learned nothing from the 1936 Olympics?
